Intertextuality in Bouvard and Pecuchet is usually described as Flaubert's work on documentary sources; yet the novel, as well as the correspondence and notes, albeit in an ambivalent manner, show considerable intertextual debt of an aesthetic and philosophical nature to Pigault-Lebrun and Paul de Kock, authors to be put before Voltaire and Rabelais amongst Flaubert's references - including in Madame Bovary.
