A comparison with model predictions of coupled zone derived growth parameters for primary αAl and βSi dendrites in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys

Limiting velocities reported for growth of αAl and βSi dendrites in competition with eutectic in Bridgman growth of Al-13-17 wt.% Si alloys yield growth parameters 1.4±0.2 K (s/μm)1/3 and 2.5 ± 0.3 K (s/μm)1/2, respectively for the velocity ranges 0.9-10 and 0.01-4 mm s-1. This value for αAl is in accord with predictions from a simple equation. The value of βSi is in agreement with predictions from a more general equation and valid for the very low value of partition coefficient applicable to βSi.
