Dr. Whitley holds the Loeb Eminent Scholar chair in Pediatrics and is professor of Pediatrics, Microbiology, and Medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, where he is also vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and associate director for Clinical Studies at the Center for AIDS Research. He is regularly listed in Who's Who in America, and in 1991 he received the American Academy of Pediatrics Award for Excellence in Pediatric Research. In 1998 he received the Distinguished Research Award from the International Society of Antiviral Research and was elected the distinguished faculty lecturer at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
