Waterwall corrosion in low-NOx combustion boilers

Corrosion behavior of waterwall tube(carbon steel)were investigated in three industrial boilers in which low-NOx combustion had been introduced. Heavy corrosion was observed in the boilers where high S fuels were used. The corrosion is attributed to sulfidation in reducing atmosphere caused by sub-stoichiometric combustion. The corrosion rate depends on H2S content in combustion gas. Installation of boundary air injection system, applications of 50Cr-50Ni spray coating and stainless steel cladding on the tubes are effective for the countermeasures. But the spray coating should not be furnished to the area which is suffered from fire cracking, because the fire cracking is accelerated by crack of splayed layer.
