ZURBARAN AND THE TEXTURES OF THE COUNTER-REFORMATION

Francisco de Zurbaran is, in the opinion of many, one of the greatest exponents of baroque painting in Spain and America. Not only that; the election of the subjects and the aesthetic treatment of the same ones, allow to consider it one of the executors of the theological program of the Counter-Reformation. Our approach to his biography and his work, particularly the series "Jacob and his Twelve Sons", help unveil the warp and weft that supported that new direction of the Catholic Church that will become strong in Seville, the city that hosted most of the professional career of the painter, and in the New World, where he oriented his production when the market and the evangelizing mission opened new opportunities.
