Chromosome banding in Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) from Chile

A cultured population of Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) from Chile was cytogenetically analysed. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were localized at the secondary constriction of submetacentric chromosome pair 22, which was at an interstitial position on the short arm. Blocks of constitutive heterochromatin and chromomycin A(3) positive bands were seen flanking both sides of the NORs. Scarce C-bands were evident, and chromosomes pairs 4 and 16 showed prominent heterochromatic blocks at centromeric and pericentromeric locations, respectively. The Distamycin A/Hoechst 33258 staining technique did not reveal any brilliant chromosome band in the karyotype.
