This article examines the "Debate on Gossip" on Chenbao Fukan, one of the most influential Chinese newspaper supplements during the May Fourth era, and its prequal, "the Peking Women's University Incident", attempting to reveal the potential factors that caused the destructive tensions in a Chinese public sphere.
