Construction, technological, and operational specifications were developed at the Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering (OKBM Afrikantov) and an assembly for separating the fuel part of a fuel assembly of a nuclear reactor and making preparations for compact two-tier packing was constructed. Since 2003, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise of the Atomic Fleet has been using such an assembly for cutting fuel assemblies of nuclear reactors from the nuclear-powered ice-breaker fleet. The assembly operates as follows. A lifting crane is used to remove a fuel assembly from the transfer container and place it on a plate 2. A guiding cone 7 centers the fuel assembly above the loading opening. The operator opens the slides of the transfer container and the assembly. The fuel assembly is lowered into the ampul 14 to the stopping point and is secured by the top and bottom securing mechanisms 10 and 12, which are placed in the working position by turning the handles 11.
