The history and evolution of Martian environment are briefly described from Viking missions. It appears that there are no organic compounds due to the presence of strong oxidants. In the laboratory we studied the behavior of adenine, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide in order to follow evolution of organics in this environment and the appearance of dioxygen. We showed that in presence of H2O2, Cu(II)-adenine complexes present catalase-like activity but also, H2O2 oxidizes adenine within the complex. Raman spectroscopy allowed us to quantify copper-adenine formation and evidenced adenine oxidation in presence of hydrogen peroxide. Kinetic parameters for H2O2 consumption are evaluated by Raman spectroscopy and those for dioxygen production are quantified by polarography.
