摘要
Tropical and Subtropical regions show high prevalence and incidence of infectious diseases, mainly caused by parasites all fecting humans and animals. Despite the high incidence, these are commonly known as 'neglected diseases'. Thoughts about the main bioethical aspects to be considered regarding the study of these diseases are presented in this essay, and some papers by scholars interested in the area are referred to. It is proposed that the fight against these tropical parasitoses should not focus exclusively on the search of specific drugs but, also, should be concerned about the socio-economic, cultural and ecological aspects involving the affected population, as well as changing the current research paradigm, wherein the only valid means of scientjfic production is the published paper. The fight against neglected diseases requires of a long term commitment where the rights of affected individuals be respected, without consideration of their origin or social condition. The establishment of a tailored informed consent is the appropriate mechanism to carry out clinical studies that are in accordance with the treated person.
