Collisions of asteroids and comets with Earth represent a significant threat to humankind in the medium-long time range. Proofs are rapidly accumulating on the occurrence of catastrophic impacts in the Earth's past, sometimes leading to the disappearance of living species. A disturbing factor is represented by our ignorance of the number, types, and size distribution of possible impactors. Recent discoveries have confirmed the importance of an observational programme like the Spaceguard Programme, aimed at discovering and computing orbits of all potentially hazardous objects.
