Structure and ion exchange properties of the natural zeolites Edingtonite and Goosecreekite

摘要
The structures of naturally occurring zeolites Edingtonite - Ba2Al4Si6O20.8H(2)O - (EDI) and Goosecreekite - CaAl2Si6O16.5H(2)O - (GOO) have been investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction. The coordination number and geometry of the counter cation site in each framework with respect to the level of hydration has been determined. Variable temperature X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis have been used to follow the dehydration profiles in order to understand the role of framework hydration to structure stability. Synthetic materials with the EDI topology have been synthesised and the ion exchange properties compared with those of the naturally Occurring mineral.
