An analysis of crack nucleation in fibre-reinforced concrete

A model is proposed to assess the influence of the orientation of fibres, due to the process of casting, on the formation of cracks in Fibre-Reinforced Concrete. By considering a locally oriented fibres volume as an inclusion in a homogeneous medium, the Eshelby's inclusion model provides a description of the microstructural stress concentration. Numerical expressions are obtained for the maximum principal stresses in the inclusion, and in the matrix. It is shown that, under tensile stresses, cracks can be nucleated at inclusion-matrix interface with a given orientation of fibres.
