Myositis ossificans in a female Doberman Pinscher.: A case report

A 26-month-old female Doberman Pinscher was presented at the clinic with a 12-months history of an intermittent right hind limb lameness unrelated to any known trauma. The dog's general condition was excellent. Physical examination revealed a right hind limb lameness, a stiff gait and signs of pain on extension of the right hip with a decreased range of motion. A firm mass medial of the right femur was evident upon palpation. The laboratory findings discovered a low concentration of von Willebrand factor antigen. Diagnostic imaging (x-ray, ultrasound and MRI) showed a bony mass craniolateral of the right femur connected with the pelvis. As much of the bony tissue as possible was removed surgically. The dog had a normal gait few days after surgery. Histologically the mass was diagnosed as a benign proliferation consisting of connective and cartilaginous tissue and mature bone. This report describes a case of local Myositis ossificans in association with a low concentration of von Willebrand factor antigen in a dog comparing to case reports in the literature.
