Inhibitive action of 1-hydroxyethylenedine-1,1-diphosphonic acid antiscalant towards corrosion of carbon steel in cooling water system

摘要
1-Hydroxyethylenedine-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) has been used as antiscalant as well as corrosion inhibitor in cooling water system (CWS) in presence and absence of zinc ions. Weight loss, electrochemical polarization and metallurgical research microscopy technique have been carried out at different temperatures and concentrations of the inhibitor. Mechanism of inhibition has been explained on the basis of molecular structure and the inhibitor provides a good inhibition efficiency and acts as anodic inhibitor when present alone and as mixed inhibitor in presence of zinc ions. However, addition of zinc ions to CWS along with HEDP, do not increase inhibition efficiency of inhibitor to an appreciable extent.
