Needs, aspects, and problems in conservation of tree species are discussed in light of ongoing domestication and rapidly diminishing natural forest resources. Forgenmap is described, a Thai-Danish integrated project aiming to contain various relevant technical disciplines in order to have a sustainable and sufficient supply of quality forest reproduction material without degrading the genetic base. Previous achievements reached in national tree improvement programs should be fully utilized and protected. Managed conservation and other non-improved stands have to contribute as well to secure a substantial national seed supply. Conservation strategies should be coordinated regionally.
