Today, marine transport is one of the world's largest industries. In this industry, the United States ranks 12th in the world merchant fleet in tonnage. As the world's largest consumer nation, most of the imports and exports of US are shipped by sea. Since transport by water is the most economical and efficient means of delivering goods, this industry is expected to expand more. In fact, marine transportation is now also considered vital to national security.
