The cooling water system is one of the major auxiliary supporting service systems for many industrial units. Malfunctioning of this system has a direct bearing on the entire unit operation. The present review aims to focus on the need for cooling water systems, problems encountered, materials used for various components of cooling water systems. The review also summarises the failures of materials in different types of cooling water systems. In conclusion, it details the preventive measures needed to reduce corrosion failures in cooling water systems.
