Application of WIBATH-00 to wave-induced currents with tide at Algarve, Portugal

摘要
An existing numerical model system of bathymetric change due to wave action and wave-induced currents has been extended to simulate combined flow fields by wave-induced and unsteady tidal currents as well as the consequent bathymetric change. The combined flow field is obtained by a direct interactive calculation instead of linear summation of both flows. In order to save computation time the tidal variation during a cycle is divided into several flow phases, and each phase is treated as a quasi-steady flow in the model system. The model system has been applied to a field situation (the Barra Nova tidal inlet) to examine model performance with the above extension. The computed combined flow field including tidal flow and wave-induced flow was found to show reasonable agreement with field measurements collected by radar observations (COSRAD) at two particular times. The computed very short-term bathymetric changes for two particular tidal phases also explain reasonably the inlet migration pattern observed from hydrographic charts.
