New open source hardware (OSH) for instrumentation and measurement are appearing regularly as the the OSH community requires more details and prefers that the journals be available online. OSH can provide a backup plan when parts are discontinued and makes it possible to publish a design in journals that specialize in instrumentation. Dr. Dan Steingart, a chemical engineering professor at the City College of New York, plans to publish an open hardware design with a Masters student, and says that such a move is expected to give him academic credit. Version tracking allows the designer to recover previous versions and create branches when major changes are made. Even if there is no OSH design that meets a project's immediate needs, it will help a user to download an OSH project and inspect the structure of the repository and the file types.
