Mechanics of functionally gradient materials: Material tailoring on the micro- and macro-levels

A scheme of material tailoring in the functionally gradient materials (FGMs) is formulated under the mechanical and thermal multiobjectives with the help of the direct sensitivity analysis and the optimization technique associated with the heat conduction/thermal stress analysis by means of incremental FEM. The spatial distribution of the volume fraction of phases is optimally determined. A hollow cylinder in a ceramics-metal FGM is tailored successfully as a material with reduced thermal stresses conducting the least amount of heat.
