The 3(rd) International Symposium Biology and Taxonomy of Green Algae took place at the Congress Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences at Smolenice, Slovakia, Oct. 6-10, 1997. The symposium was attended by 55 participants from 19 countries of Europe, Asia and Northern America. 28 lectures were given and 23 poster presentations exhibited and discussed. A commemorative programme was devoted to the recently deceased Czech phycologist Dr. Hanus ETTL. The scientific programme dealt with taxonomy, ecology, applied limnology, cytophysiology and genetics of chlorophytes and euglenophytes. One mid-symposial excursion to hot springs at Piestany-Spa and the three-day postsymposial excursion to Neusiedlersee/Ferto-to and Balaton lakes (Hungary) were organized.
