WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF AN URBAN WATER, BATLAMA CREEK (GIRESUN), TURKEY BY APPLYING MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES

Multivariate statistical techniques, cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied to the data on water quality of Batlama Creek (Turkey), generated during 2014-15, with monitoring at three different sites for 20 parameters. The water quality parameters of dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), conductivity, chlorophyll-a, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total alkalinity, total hardness, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrate (NO3), total phosphate (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), chlorine (C1), total suspended solids (TSS) were measured. Two significant sampling locations (sites 1 and 2) and (site 3) were determined based upon their similarity of water quality characteristics. Hazelnut production is the main income of the town and pesticide and fertilizers were administered intensely. Therefore, results revealed that the major causes of water quality deterioration were related to inflow of effluent from agricultural, industrial, domestic, and saline seeps into the creek at site 3 and resulting from people living in towns and farming at sites 1 and 2.
