摘要
Oxidations of aliphatic aldehydes by quinolinium dichromate (QDC) in aqua-acetic acid medium revealed that the rate is first order in [QDC] and [aldehyde] and second order with respect to [H+]. Zucker-Hammett plots proved that water molecule acts as proton abstracting agent in slow step. Hydrated aldehyde and protonated QDC have been suggested as reactive species. The mechanism of reaction involves the formation of chromic-ester, followed by C-H bond fission in slow step, where the products are carboxylic acids. The order of reactivity of aldehyde was found to be formaldehyde > acetaldehyde > propionaldehyde > valeraldehyde. Also rate law has been suggested.
