摘要：
A software architecture for developing a wide range of applications on the Internet is presented. This architecture is based on three layers, The backbone layer is a server-based object-oriented database management system. The Java programming language is used to develop client-side interfaces. These client programs communicate with the remote database using CORBA. This architecture solves many problems of developing distributed applications and large collections of knowledge and information within an organization. Examples are presented including on-line authoring and collaborative workgroup environments, electronic publications, decision support systems, multimedia, and knowledge representation.
