摘要
There is a famous problem between particular essence and universal knowledge in Aristotle's ontology. In this article, I argue that Locke's real essence is also particular. Therefore, Locke will also face this same problem as Aristotle. Regarding this problem in Locke, I shall address two questions: (1) what is Locke's conception of the relation between the universal objects of knowledge and the real essence; and (2) how Locke avoids Aristotle's dilemma concerning particular essence and universal knowledge. I argue that Locke's solution to this problem is based on his distinctive theory of ideas.
