A quantitative chemiluminescent immunoassay for progesterone has been developed for the random access LIAISON((R)) analyzer. Progesterone levels are measured in order to monitor ovulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and to predict IVF success. The objective of the current study is to demonstrate the performance characteristics of the LIAISON((R)) progesterone assay. The assay range is from 0.4 to 40 ng/ml. Lowest reportable concentration is 0.4 ng/ml, and recovery averages 105%. Correlation with DPC Coat-a-Count((R)) RIA results in a slope of 0.89, intercept 0.39, and r = 0.97, N = 147. Inter-assay imprecision is <= 12%, and intra-assay imprecision is <= 10% for concentrations above 3 ng/ml. We conclude that the LIAISON((R)) progesterone assay offers rapid and precise quantitation of progesterone in human serum or plasma samples.
