High performance dielectric resonators (DRs) and filters are used widely in wireless and satellite communication systems due to their superior characteristics, that include high unloaded Q, excellent temperature stability, and smaller size compared to their air-filled counterpart. The properties of a DR that includes resonant frequency and unloaded Q can be accurately determined by full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations. The DR is usually placed in a shielded metallic enclosure with air-filled regions whose dimensions are relative to those of the DR for most applications. A simple DR model is helpful during the initial stages of the analysis, though it lacks the accuracy required for modern microwave circuit design. The DRs are used widely in hand-set applications since filter size is vital for such applications.
