A constitutive model that incorporates the details of material microstructure is proposed for modelling metal matrix composite (MMC) materials. It is based on a three-dimensional semi-analytical analysis using the homogenization method. The linear elastic behaviour of the composite is represented by an orthotropic elasticity tensor, obtained by solving an elastic microstructural problem with periodicity boundary conditions followed by homogenization. The effectiveness of the constitutive model is tested by comparing the results of microscopic analysis using the model and those of experiments and-numerical finite element predictions. For a wide range of composites, the proposed model is found to be computationally efficient and yields extremely accurate solutions.
