Spin off: The synthesis of optically active biaryl compounds using enantioselective organocatalysis is highlighted. Foldamers coupled with organocatalysis, specifically hydrogen-bonding interactions (see scheme; Boc=tert-butoxycarbonyl), can be used to access compounds with a stereogenic axis. New selective syntheses of atropoisomers can be inspired by these findings, thus enhancing the use of atropoisomeric compounds in synthesis and catalysis. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
