Effects of air pollution on the incidence of stroke Association between air pollutants and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality has been clearly demonstrated during the acute episodes of air pollution in the thirties and fifties. Several epidemiological studies have evaluated the short and long term relationships between lower concentration of air pollutants and stroke. Main urban pollutants commonly measured are particulate matter less than 2.5 and 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter, carbon monoxid, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Results are conflicting. For each air pollutant, a slight association was found only in half of the studies. Accurate measure of individual exposition is the main challenge. Large studies with finest qualitative and quantitative measure of individual exposition to air pollution are needed.
