Analysis of S-allele genotypes and genetic diversity in the apple

摘要
The existence of 9 alleles (Sa - Si) were recognized by pollination test in the apple. The cultivars, which were bred in Japan, consist of 9 to 12 S-allele combinations including undetermined S-alleles. The results from the investigation of perentage indicated that there are 486 to 648 S-alleles in 1165 cultivars and strains. Therefore, sufficient genetic diversity is present in the apple. However, a few cultivars were successful for breeding materials because about 55% of the investigated cultivars derived from the twelve cultivars. These facts suggested past excessive inbreeding. In a forward-looking apple breeding plan, we need to adopt many unused breeding materials, and we need to breed new ones with moderate quality and sufficient genetic diversity.
