摘要：

This survey reports on motive power developments for the previous year ending August 1998. Invitations to participate were sent to a number of locomotive builders throughout the world. Although the response was limited, railway industry trade journals and other rail magazines provided additional input. General information is presented on three diesel locomotives and 10 electric locomotives. For further details on any given design, the reader is urged to contact the builders.
