An analysis of the lipid bilayer structure modifications under photoreceptor membrane phase separation

摘要
A comparative study of the lipid bilayer structure of rod photoreceptor membranes in the state of lamellar phase and in the dehydration-induced phase-separated state characterized by coexisting Lamellar and H-II phases has been carried out by small-angle X-ray diffraction methods. The samples were prepared in the form of thin multilamellar films of unbleached bovine retinal rod photoreceptor membranes isolated by Ficoll density gradient method. Electron density distributions calculated at 1.7 nm resolution for the photoreceptor membranes in the lamellar state and in the phase-separated state showed similar asymmetric form. It was concluded that the lipid phase separation does not dramatically affect the structure of the photoreceptor membrane lipid bilayer.
