This article deals with the political narratives of the public sector in observation of tourism activity in the Amazon region of Maranhao. Its objective is to present the natural and artificial offer of potential places for the development of the sector, conceived based on state planning and national guidelines. The 1970s gave greater visibility to environmental causes, Brazil began to excel in the human/nature interaction, based on global environmental discussions and their impacts. In this sense, nature, the tourism sector's greatest appeal, forwards in Maranhao, the first steps of a period of investments, entitled Plano Maior, whose objective was to "transform Maranhao into one of the biggest ecotourism destinations in the country". The descriptive qualitative research included studies in bibliographic and documentary collection. The results identify incomplete narratives regarding the execution of public policies, despite the extensive tourist potential that includes the municipalities of the Amazon pole and the strategic proposals, endowed with programs and projects for the development of the identified areas
