摘要
Many theories have been developed through the years following different schools of thought, paradigms, methodologies and methods for improving the existing science or developing new one. While the qualitative and quantitative methods, which are rooted in the postmodern and positivism paradigms, have been used widely, the mixed method is getting more popular for answering complex research questions. The primary aim of this research is to develop new quantitative method which will be used for analysing qualitative data and the primary results from qualitative analysis derived from semi-structured or unstructured interviews. The new quantitative method will be based on the triangulation approach in order to analyse the existing qualitative information and answer the primary research. A new scoring system will be developed for quantifying the qualitative information using the superordinate and sub themes derived from the primary qualitative analysis using 'test' dataset from Mental Health area. The scoring system will be constructed for each participant and for each superordinate theme as the total number of sub themes recorded within one superordinate theme for this participant divided by the total number of sub themes recorded within the same superordinate theme for all the participants. It will be constructed in such a way so as to show the level of prevalence of each overarching themes within each participant. The estimated scores from the 32 participants in the 'test' data will be analysed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using the non-parametric bootstrap as the assumption of multinormality of the variables included in the SEM might be violated. The SEM is chosen for analysing the scores of each superordinate theme as it has the ability to explore the relationships between the overarching themes and the participant's characteristics such as number of grandchildren, average hours of contact between grandmother and child, the age and gender of the child, and the distance between the grandmother and the family. It is this mixture of quantitative methods and qualitative data as well as the fact that the sample size is small that makes this research unique and important for any research area. This new approach will bridge a gap betweeen the two cognative areas of qualitative and quantitative research and hopefully move the research in mental health to a new level.
