Sidelobe control in adaptive beamforming using a penalty function

The use of a simple penalty function to control the sidelobes in a least squares adaptive beamformer is described. The algorithm is formulated in both the covariance and data domains, the latter being more suitable for finite precision arithmetic and parallel computation. The power of the basic technique is demonstrated in the context of a linear antenna array by using it to suppress mainbeam jamming.
