The Camera Lucida (and the Digital Camera): the Re-mediation of Photography in Computer Generated Animation

Through a rereading of Barthes' Camera Lucida, this essay analyzes the values of the photographic image that are present in the digital image. The ideas regarding objectivity, truth, manipulation, transience and verification of presence that are unique to photography, are re-mediated (in the words of Bolter and Grusin) in photorealist style CGI animation. The digital image is conceived, therefore, as a hyperimage, capable of integrating other previous means of representation and reproducing the values they transmit. The analysis of the photorealist elements in the Coca-Cola's commercial Happiness Factory explains the developed theoretical argument.
