Structural modifications by thermo-oxidation of NBR and HNBR elastomers

摘要
Investigation of the thermo-oxidative degradation of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) elastomers by IR spectroscopy and determination of gel content revealed significantly dissimilar behaviour of the two compounds. Qualitative interpretation of the spectra and evaluation of some kinetic parameters allow to assign the superior stability of HNBR (due to its saturated backbone) unlike NBRs which possess high unsaturated chain segments of polybutadiene, quite susceptible to oxygen attack; particularly at elevated temperature.
