摘要
This paper is concerned with designing and simulation of computer networks based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Technology which is with a high-performance; cell-oriented switching technology that utilizes fixed small size packets to carry different types of traffic. The work presents principles of operation, protocols and internetworking with ATM technology. There is increasing interest for internetworking with ATM technology in the Local Area Networks (LANs) environments to achieve a better efficient communication, henceforth the researcher set a design of internetworking using ATM technology (ATM LANE) to connect the LANs in the two buildings of the Computer and Software Engineering Department in the University of Technology as a case study. Simulation program using Visual Basic language and Mat lab program is depended on the computer as a delivery system to all activities of the simulation program. The paper has achieved the following important conclusions from internetworking with ATM technology. 1. It enables users to acquire the desired level and quality of service because the transmission time delay using ATM technology is very limited. 2. It offers guaranteed network access for voice and video applications because the throughput rate in the ATM LANE for different multimedia communication messages is high with hundreds of Mbps
