Skeletal muscle dysfunction is common in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Resistance training (RT) is a proven effective intervention to improve skeletal muscle dysfunction. This column explains COPD's relationship to skeletal muscle dysfunction and gives guidelines for developing, implementing, and monitoring a RT program for persons with COPD.
