Affluent consumers in the industrialized world have spent the past few decades enjoying a historically unprecedented era of plenty. Browsing the aisles of an American big box store or a French hypermarché or scrolling through pages of results on Amazon.com would give the impression that the world’s materials needs had pretty much been met for those with the means to buy them. And products are often affordable by many.
