Reaction of three previously reported phosphorus ylides Ph(3)PCHCOC(6)H(4)CH(3) (V), Ph(3)PCHCOC(6)H(4)NO(2). (Y(2)) and Ph(3)PCHCOC(6)H(4)Cl (Y(3)) with AgNO(3) in 1:2 molar ratios using dichloromethane as solvent yielded mononuclear complexes of the type [(Y)(2).Ag]NO(3) (Y =Y(1)(1), Y(2)(2) and Y(3)(3)). The reaction of PdCl(2) with (Y(2)) in equimolar ratio in acetonitrile at the reflux temperature gave the complex [PdCl(mu-Cl) Ph3PCHCOC6H4NO2]2 (4) along with the phosphonium salt [Ph(3)PCH(2)COC(6)H(4)NO(2)]Br. The same reaction in a 1:2 molar ratio with (V) at the reflux temperature gave a binuclear complex of the type [Pd{CH{P(C(6)H(4))(Ph(3))(2)}COC(6)H(4)CH(3)} (mu-Cl)](2) (5) along with the phosphonium salt [Ph(3)PCH(2)COC(6)H(4)CH(3)]Br. This complex reacts with PPh(3) in a 1:2 molar ratio in dichloromethane to give the product of bridge-splitting [Pd{CH{P(C(6)H(4))(Ph(3))(2)}COC(6)H(4)CH(3)}Cl (PPh(3))] (6). The characterization of these compounds was carried out by IR, (1)H, (31)P and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.
