Synthesis of boron nitride nanotubes and nanocapsules with LaB6

Boron nitride nanotubes, nanocapsules and nanocages were fabricated by are-melting LaB6 and boron/LaB6 powder compacts in a nitrogen/argon gas atmosphere, which were determined by high-resolution electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The diameters of the boron nitride nanotubes, nanocapsules and nanocages were in the range of 10-100 mm, 10-30 nm and similar to 80 nm, respectively. The present work indicates that La could be a good candidate as a catalyst to produce the boron nitride fullerene materials by changing the ratio of LaB6/B. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
