摘要
The effect of strontium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy, and its sensitivity to casting section thickness are investigated. Three phases, block-shaped Mg17Al12, acicular Mg20Al20Mn5Sr and insular Mg-16(Al,Zn)(2)Sr, are identified in the Sr-containing AZ31 alloys. Although decreasing casting thickness decreases the grain size due to an increase in cooling rate, the Sr addition provides a greater effect for additions less than 0.5%. Higher levels of Sr lead to the formation of the Mg-16(Al,Zn)(2)Sr phase which consumes the Sr and precludes its effect on refining the grain size. The mechanical properties of as-cast AZ31 magnesium alloy are improved by the Sr grain refinement, although the elongation decreases with the formation of the Mg-16(Al,Zn)(2)Sr phase. An optimum Sr addition between 0.01 and 0.1% is recommended.
