This paper deals with the way in which facework (politeness, impoliteness and self-oriented) is managed in comments appearing in the fora of Spanish papers ABC, El Mundo and El Pais. Those comments respond to several news published by these newspapers along January 2020, reflecting the reaction of Carmen Calvo, who was at the time vice-president of the Spanish government, regarding the document that the Real Academia Espanola (RAE) had elaborated on gender- inclusive language and Spanish Constitution. Our analysis focuses on how the authors of such comments manage face, with special interest in impolite and self-oriented facework, and how these comments reflect aspects related to how gender-inclusive language is perceived and its presence in the political agenda.
