摘要
In Rowlandson's Soveraignty & Goodness of God, the first and most well known captivity narrative of Puritan New England, the first-person narrator interprets the traumatic experience of her three-month captivity as an ordeal from God in which she stands her ground. However, her pious thinking barely camouflages feelings of indignation in the face of God's inhumanity. Due to the antagonism between feelings of indignation and acquiescence the narrative turns into a testimony of >culpabilisation< - the internalization of guilt and the formation of modern conscience.
