Silica use in RCC dams - Considerable cost savings and improvement of quality?

Adding silica to the roller compacted concrete (RCC) mix will, under given conditions, save material costs and improve the quality of the fresh and hardened RCC. Laboratory tests and previous experience in Norway confirm these statements, but they have yet to be proved through a full-scale trial and actual construction of an RCC dam. The potential cost savings will vary considerably from site to site and between different countries due to local differences in silica and cement prices. This paper outlines some of the interesting results from the R&D project "RCC for Norwegian conditions", with special focus upon the features of silica-RCC.
