The accuracy to which the oscillator strengths of certain 2p(4)3s-2p(4)3p and 2p(4)3p-2p(4)3d transitions in Na III have been calculated in earlier work has recently been called into question by Berrington (2001 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 34 1443-51). Several very extensive configuration interaction calculations of these transitions are presented, in order to assess the convergence of the oscillator strengths as the size of the calculation is increased. We demonstrate a substantial degree of convergence in our calculations, and agree well with independent calculations of Froese Fischer and Tachiev (2003 At. Data Nucl. Data Tables submitted), but continue to differ substantially from the 'Breit-Pauli' R-matrix (BPOP) results of Berrington (2001). Difficulties in the application of the BPOP to these transitions are discussed.
