Characterization of superplasticity in Ti-5.5Al-1Fe alloys

Ti-5.5Al-1Fe alloy was found to exhibit superplastic elongation of more than 400% at all examined temperatures from 1050 to 1200 K and in a wide range of strain rates from 10-4 to 10-2 s-1. The optimum elongation of 800% was obtained at 1100 K at 1 × 10-3 s-1. The strain-rate sensitivity at 1100 K was approximately 0.5, and the apparent activation energy was 314 kJ/mol. The present work showed that full replacement of V with Fe can successfully bring about an excellent superplasticity while retaining a good room-temperature strength.
